God Sees Me
“This reflection on Genesis 16:13 reminds us of Hagar’s encounter with El Roi, the God who sees. In the wilderness, she discovered that even in loneliness and distress, she was not invisible to the Lord. This post explores the comfort of being fully known and compassionately seen by God, and includes a heartfelt prayer of gratitude and trust. God Sees Me (Genesis 16:13)
“She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’” – Genesis 16:13
Reflection
Hagar, alone and distressed in the wilderness, encountered God in her deepest moment of need. She discovered something profound: the Lord is not distant, but intimately aware of our struggles, pain, and hidden tears. By naming Him El Roi — “the God who sees me” — Hagar testified that even in isolation, she was not invisible to God.
This truth is timeless. When we feel overlooked, misunderstood, or forgotten, God sees us. He sees the burdens we carry, the prayers we whisper, and the hopes we hold quietly in our hearts. His gaze is not one of judgment but of compassion, guiding us toward His promises and reminding us that we are never alone.
To be seen by God is to be known fully and loved completely. His vision penetrates beyond appearances, reaching into the depths of our soul. Just as He met Hagar in her wilderness, He meets us in ours — offering comfort, direction, and hope.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, El Roi,
Thank You for being the God who sees me. In moments when I feel invisible or forgotten, remind me that Your eyes are always upon me with love and care. Help me to rest in the assurance that You know my heart, my struggles, and my needs. Teach me to trust Your presence in the wilderness seasons of life, and to walk with confidence knowing I am never unseen. May my life reflect gratitude for Your watchful care, and may I extend that same compassion to others who long to be seen. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
